About This Property

This extraordinary property, built in the 1920’s on over
two acres was purchased with the thought of a future
additions. Mindful of the scale and design of the original
home, when the time came, the owners carefully selected
architects whose artistry would reflect this vision.

Viewing the home from the outside, in particular the back
and library stair tower, you see how seamlessly the old
and new are blended. It is quite a story and if not for this
incredibly meticulous couple who oversaw every aspect of
the project and two architectural firms sharing their vision
it would never have happened.

The first phase in 2000 included the Library was inspired
by the Thomas Edison library on view at the Edison
Museum and a Loggia. The Library is large, double story
space with built-in window seating, tall windows, recessed
and custom lighting, built in maple bookcases and French
doors leading to a private garden. The Loggia extends from
the stair tower to the kitchen with French doors to the
living room on one side while the other side doors open to
the large patio and gardens. A floor of beautiful
handmade tile and radiant heat, the room provides
incredible flow. Coxe and Price Architects created
preliminary drawings for the second phase. In 2008 these
drawings were incorporated by Francis C. Klein Architects
in designing the stunning Kitchen, Family Room and
Butler’s Pantry.

The owners of this fine home are talented, visual people
who have expressed themselves in the attention to detail
throughout. They have three sons whose sport of choice is
ice hockey. It is for this reason that they built a covered,
fully equipped ice hockey rink with it’s own chiller unit and
“mini Zamboni”. Built in 2001 by Burley Rink Supply it
features a dedicated electrical panel, compressor, cooling,
pipes under the concrete floor and glass and hockey
boards around the perimeter. This has been an incredible
source of pleasure and a very unusual backyard treasure.

The generous center-hall foyer extends through to the
kitchen. From this position you have a 180-degree view of
spacious rooms filled with natural light. There are rich
rich oak floors , 11”crown picture moldings, 9
½”baseboard moldings are featured throughout. The
elegant staircase features a wall of windows at the
landing.

The focal point of the living room is the fireplace, once
featured in a Brooklyn Brownstone with an elaborate hand
carved mantel and a Moravian Tile surround. Built- in
cabinets with lighted display shelves are positioned to one
side, while French doors with leaded glass open to an
office.

The office is a versatile room featuring built-in closets, a
desk and shelves and provides access to the library.
Across the foyer, the formal dining room showcases
French wood paneled doors, which are original to the
home. Panel wainscoting, rich hardwood floors, two 8-
paned double windows welcome the sunlight.

The heart of this home is the superbly designed kitchen.
Custom Superior Wood cabinets are topped with St.
Augustine granite counters offering plenty of storage and
workspace. Above the professional Wolf 6 burner gas
cooktop with grill is a subway tile backsplash with
decorative tile inset and a professional exhaust hood. A
huge center island includes a breakfast bar with marble
and walnut counters. The Carlisle Wide Plank walnut floors
with radiant heat are featured in the Kitchen, Breakfast
area, Butler’s Pantry and Family Room.

Above the under-mount double sink are large windows with views of the
backyard while high end appliances are arranged for easy
access. In addition to the Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer,
there are two Sub Zero refrigerator drawers in the island
as well as a Viking Double Oven with warming drawer and
a Double Drawer Fisher Paykel Dishwasher. Recessed
lighting illuminates the entire kitchen. The kitchen enjoys
open views to the Family Room. The Breakfast area is awash
in sunlight courtesy of tall windows with transoms above.

The Butler’s Pantry features a 132 bottle capacity Sub Zero
Wine Cooler and a Miele built in coffee system. Allowing
for plenty of additional storage, the Superior Custom
Cabinets continue throughout the pantry with glass panel
cabinet doors and Pietra Del Cordova stone countertop.
From the Butler’s Pantry, a pocket door opens to stairs
leading down to the garage and an original back staircase
connects to the second level of the house.

A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with raised hearth is the
dominant feature in the Family Room. Triple windows
with transoms look out onto the backyard, while open
access to the kitchen increases the sense of space and
helps to form a truly social atmosphere.

As described in the opening, the library has it’s own
history and is the result of careful thought and attention to
detail. This large, double story space, has built-in window
seating, tall windows, recessed and custom lighting, built
in maple bookcases and French doors leading to a private
garden.

From the library, a stair tower leads to an open second
level with a vaulted wood ceiling, sitting areas, built in
bookcases, custom lighting, large windows, balcony, and
entry to the master suite, through a private hallway.

The Master Suite is a luxurious escape featuring a large
bedroom with a rich polished wood floor, four thermo
windows, custom baseboard moldings and a separate
sitting area.

A luxurious Master Bath with handmade tiles includes a
centered decorative tile inset, tile wainscoting with
decorative border tiles, a boutique style marble sink, walk-
in tile shower with large rain shower head, frosted glass
enclosure and a jetted spa tub and radiant floor heat. A
toilet and bidet are separated by half walls.

From the private hallway connecting to the second level of
the library, two atrium doors open to the master dressing
room featuring mirrored, full height closets along two
walls and large windows.

The family bedrooms located on this level all include
ample closet storage and are well served by the hall bath.
From the hallway, stairs lead to the finished third level.
The fifth bedroom is located on the third level with a walk-
in closet and new en suite full bath. There is access to attic
storage through the walk-in closet.

Mostly unfinished, the lower level has substantial storage
capacity, a huge laundry room, a full bath and a clothes
storage room.

Resting on over two acres of beautifully landscaped, level
property, this home has something for everyone. Designed
by the award winning Landscape Architecture firm,
Barreto/Dowd, the property features lush greenery,
punctuated by an abundance of perennials, flowering
shrubs and specimen trees. From the street, there is a
Walpole Fence and gates that open to the paver driveway
leading you to the two-car garage and convenient
mudroom. The expansive driveway can accommodate 10
cars and is flanked by a large, charming garden shed. Paver
walkways wind through the front and back property. A
large bluestone patio extends off the back of the house
ideal for dining, entertaining and relaxation.

This fine home is positioned on a quiet neighborhood
street across from the Essex County Country Club Golf
Course and nearby to beautiful South Mountain
Reservation, the Turtle Back Zoo, shopping, schools and
NYC transportation.
